This chunk of manzanita (“little apple” in Spanish) burl is mounted on a carved block of Cuban mahogany. It was turned on a lathe to create a dish shape that reveals the beautiful burl figure found in manzanita root, while the rest was power carved and highlighted with copper patina. Manzanita burl comes from the plant’s root ball, so in my carving I frequently find pockets of sand, granite, or in this case quartz embedded inside the burl. The burl and base can be positioned independently for best effect.
