Out sick yesterday and half of today, I finally got to hollowing out 8 tropical almond and spalted oak bowls. They range from 10-13” wide. All went well with the exception of one oak bowl that lost some bits at the edge thanks to the pith. Only one other has cracks, but it will shine with copper stitching or inlay. The spalting in this oak is gobsmacking. 🤙✨😍
This is white oak I processed in July. I cut it into rough blanks and then stored them outside, wrapped in plastic to encourage spalting. I finally got to them today, and holy smokes. They look better than I could have hoped. I’ve got 8 of these, some of them red oak, and they now have the outside shape and tenons (probably too small for the size, but eh). I’m excited to hollow them out tomorrow. 🤙✨😍
Fresh biscuits from Raleigh, NC! Actually these are from my summer trip and were wrapped in plastic to encourage spalting instead of cracks. It was a success. Photobomb by a nasty, slimy piece of Norfolk Island pine (top o’ slide 1) that will be my biggest bowl yet. All that gunk creates gorgeous color in the wood. 👍✨
My son’s pasta dinner in one of my pecan bowls, salvaged from a tree in my brother’s backyard in Raleigh, N.C. he asked for seconds and geeked out on the dish. Feeling very fortunate tonight. 🤙✨🙏
Fresh Snow Goons in my Etsy shop! Meet Snowey Todd (first slide)! Link in bio or find them at ncwoodsmith/etsy.com
Maple burl and resin lidded box (lid pending). My first of these was with bottlebrush burl.
